3 Years Ago, I made a critical decision to change my work life. Went from 40 work hours per week to the current 10 work hours per week. Migraine is completely gone. Body pain/neck pain almost zero. And, as I found out last week, I can now watch 3D movies, without having to wear my spectacles.

It happened like this. Some time ago, I was traveling to submit my assignments to my long-distance college. You can read about that here.

On my return journey, I realized, the work itself was completed early at the college campus. I had a few hours to kill. So, I took the metro, and then, logged into a mall which houses a multiplex. (note: Almost all malls in India, have a multiplex). I looked at the full menu, and picked a movie that is starting immediately, and finishes early enough, allowing me to reach the train station for my departure.

As a digital nomad and frequent traveler, I am an experienced packer and have all the necessary tools and bags and related things, always upon me. It just so happens, the guy sitting next to me, was also a student of IGNOU. The odds! We ended up chatting, and as he was a young man, in my usual style of buying random people food, I bought him movie snacks during the movie interval.

Anyway, after sitting through the endless torrent of commercials and trailers, the movie finally began playing. I dug into my travel satchel and, ah. I don’t have my spectacles. How unfortunate. Since 2017, I have not been able to enjoy 3D movies, without having to wear my glasses. It did not occur to me to pack the glasses as I have not been needing them for many months. This was unconscious, and I had not yet realized that my eyesight has been improving due to a change in lifestyle.

A few seconds later, I resigned myself to watch the movie anyway. From past experience, I know that, without my spectacles, and this is a 3D movie, I will be forced to watch the entire movie with the ‘3D double effect’. I mentally prepared for 90 minutes of ‘double effect’ watching, and then, I put on the 3D glasses.

Then, something bizarre happened. There was no double effect. It took me a few seconds to realize what is happening. Then, as the movie progressed, I was made self aware of the fact that, my change in lifestyle has had a general improvement on my health, and by extension, on my eyes.

I trace it back to my decision to move away from coding work in 2021.

  1. I pretty much stopped taking on developer style projects from my clients.
  2. I stopped spending so much in front of my computer. I mean, when I was a developer, along with spending 40 hours working for clients, I also had to spend an additional 10 to 20 hours, learning new stuff. I mean, being a developer is not an easy career to be in, especially as a freelancer. It’s a boon, and a curse.
  3. I also switched to a now routine, 10 plus hour sleep routine.
  4. I stopped using the phone and tablet too much. I stopped playing video games and console gaming. So, screen time has reduced.
  5. I also slowly started reducing my work hours. In 2021, it was 40 hours per week. Then, it reduced to 30 hours (2022). 20 hours (2023). Now, in 2024, I have brought it down to 10 hours of work per week. I am now hoping to further bring it down to 5 hours of working per week. However, that seems too ambitious, but, I have high hopes.
  6. I have also recently switched to a low-calorie diet and stopped eating fatty foods and complete stopped junk food like pizzas and burgers. And I am exercising regularly.

It looks like all these changes, some planned, and others, accidental, have restored my eye sight to some extent. And, as I type this, I realize, earlier, I would have plenty fo difficulty reading sign boards and stuff like that. However, lately, I am able to read sign boards with less difficulty.

Okay, I guess, I am thankful to myself.
