Racing games are always fun. I still remember playing Need for Speed on PC, way back in the 90s along with Tomb Raider 3. These two games were one of these first few games I played on PC. Thanks to the lack of console gaming in India, PC gaming is where everything happened for kids like me in the 90s.

Need for Speed will always be the racing reminder in my head. However, the last few Need for Speed games have been downright bad and ugly. Fortunately, over the last 18 months (Pandemic duration) Xbox Game Pass and Apple Arcade have dominated and decided my gaming choices. That is why, Forza Horizon 4 with its availability in Game Pass + Xbox One S (which I own currently) and PC (I have two gaming computers powered by GTX 1060 and RTX 3060 respectively), is such an amazing experience and has replaced Need for Speed as my goto racing option.

As a mostly single player guy, I used to enjoy Forza Horizon on a weekly basis. After a few months, I got bored of the Great Britain map. There is only so many times you can drive in the same location before the feeling of wonder vanishes. The multiplayer of Forza is very bad, especially as there are few players in Indian Region.

So, I stopped.

Now, Forza Horizon 5 is coming. This week, Microsoft released a brand new trailer of Forza Horizon 5.

For me, Forza Horizon 4 was always about lush visuals, incredible racing that is a good mix between arcade and realistic and tons and tons of cars on a big location.

Horizon 5 seems to do all this. It definitely looks like a reskin of Forza Horizon 4. I am also one of those people who is convinced that video game visuals have reached the Zenith of what they can in the last few years. Visually, Forza Horizon 4 already looked good. So, Forza Horizon 5 looks only slightly better. I watched the above video in 4K on a 4K iMac screen. It looks good, but it does not look any better than Horizon 4.

Final Note

Putting aside the feeling of dejavu and sameness, I am looking forward to roaming around in a new location. Mexico is going to be a lot of fun. I will get the game for no cost as part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription. I will probably play it on the RTX 3060 with all the goodness of ray tracing. I mean, the Xbox Series X is still a no show in Indian retailers. Just like Horizon 4, I might even upgrade to the ultimate bundle to get all the new cars and future DLCs.

Collecting cars. Just roaming around, driving past volcanoes and sand storms is going to be a lot of fun.
