Obtained Web Development (Credly) Certificate via IBM Skills Build
Credly has become like the ‘cool’ thing to do when it comes to showcasing certificates. To coding students, this is a fine opportunity to collect a high-quality certificate from IBM and dense up their resume.
For the last few months, I have been on some kind of a marathon skill acquire situation which is coinciding with my immense effort to return full time to Academia. There is my BA English degree for which, I am currenly writing the exams. There is my MA Economics degree that is scheduled to begin in July or August 2024.
Both of these degrees are to lead me to at least 1 PhD Doctorate degree, years down the line. Hopefully, 2 or more, if the gods smile upon me.
I figured, for the sake of my freelancing career, acquiring new skills and also to pad up my resume for the PhD application (2 years from now, after I finish my Economics Masters), I need to start collecting some certificates.
First, I obtained the Economics Python certificate from BerkeleyX, from the folks at eDX.
and, now, I have obtained another certificate from the IBM run, SkillsBuild, online MOOC.
At first, I was highly doubtful about this. Credly linked certificates usually cost a decent amount of money. For example, the only other credly certificate I have is from Microsoft, for the MVP award Alumni. Still, I decided to take a leap of faith.
- Best case scenario, I add a verified certificate to my credly collection.
- Worse case scenario, I learnt some cool stuff about technology which will help my freelancing tutoring business.
So, I started with this course (I also began another course, the studying and certificate should happen in a few days/week or more). IBM SkillsBuild calls them, “Learning Plan”
Some of these learning plans are ‘digitally credentialed’. That means, if you finish it, along with the completion badge on the SkillsBuild site, you also get a cool badge on credly.
Credly has become like a ‘cool’ thing. Wherever you go, you see credly when it comes to showcasing skills. For example, Upwork has a direct integration with Credly, and showcases my certificates.
So, the learning plan is linked to these classes and sessions. You finish these sessions (which are a combination of content plus quizzes) one after another. After completing a session (the lesson happens on an unrelated site), within 24 ours (but in my case things happened very fast. usually within 1 to 12 hours), the progress will be passed on from the unrelated site back to the main SkillsBuild site.
I finished all the lessons and almost immediately, the credly certificate was added to my account.
Once again, very surprised that this actually worked. IBM actually spending money on all this. Free courses are one thing, but an actual credly certificate sounds too good.
